Individual Penetrameters / IQI's - ASTM-E-1025

Individual Penetrameters / IQI's - ASTM-E-1025

Overview

Individual ASTM-E-1025 Penetrameters come in a full range of thicknesses, sizes and materials. A notch system is used on the IQI to identify 8 grades of materials in order of increased attenuation, and lead figures identify the thickness of the material to be radiographed on the other end. In addition, the material and specification are etched into the IQI. Serialization and Calibration are available, as well as Encapsulation in clear, thin plastic and Wood Cases. Wood cases come in two sizes for encapsulated and non-encapsulated IQIs, and are engineered to prevent loss and damage by keeping IQI's firmly in place using a shock absorbing sponge rubber insert in the lid.

Penetrameter Sets are also available:

Shims & Step Wedges

Shims can be used when it is impractical to place the IQI directly on the object being radiographed. Some codes require that shims be used under IQIs to compensate for thickness of a backing ring or weld reinforcement. Their dimensions allow at least 1/8" clearance on each side of the IQI.

Step wedges that are used for calibration and evaluation of techniques are also available. When an object with varying thicknesses is radiographed a step wedge of the same material, incorporating the same thickness, may often be advantageously used.

Thickness

2% of the thickness of the material to be radiographed to the nearest fractional size.
Minimum Thickness: 0.005" or per below table

Standard Image Quality Levels
Image Quality Levels IQI Thickness Minimum Perceptible Hole Diameter Equivalent IQI Sensitivity*
2-1 T 1/50 (2%) of Specimen Thickness T 1.4%
2-2 T** T 2.0%
2-4 T T 2.8%
Special Image Quality Levels
1-1 T 1/100 (1%) of Specimen Thickness T 0.7
1-2 T T 1
4-2 T 1/25 (4%) of Specimen Thickness T 4

*Equivalent IQI sensitivity is that thickness of the IQI, expressed as a percentage of the part thickness, in which the 2 hole would be visible under the same conditions.

**For Level 2-2 Radiologic - the 2 hole in an IQI, 1/50 (2%) of the specimen thickness, is visible

Step 2
Select Size Group that contains required IQI size
  • The size specified should represent the thickness of the material to be radiographed.
  • The actual thickness of the IQI will be 2% of the size specified.
  • Per ASTM-E-1025, IQI's under #5 will be marked with the requested size but will have the same thickness and hole sizes as a #5 IQI. If true 2% thickness IQI's are required for sizes under #5, see True 2% Penetrameters / IQI's - ASTM-E-1025.

If you are unsure what size you require, see the following guide:

Add Items to Cart
Select your desired material from the top dropdown item, and your item range in the Pricing Section. Input the number of desired IQIs to the right of the dropdown menu. If the IQIs are to be serialized and/ or calibrated, the number of desired IQIs should match the serialization / calibration option. (I.e., if ordering 3 IQIs that need serialization, input '3' in the 'Individual IQI, Serialize' quantity field)
 Step 5
