Probes for Every Application

Dakota offers a wide variety of delay line, pencil and contact probes to work in combination with their PVX and PZX precision thickness gauges to meet your measuring needs. The following is a breakdown of the 3 types of single element probes and the applications they're typically used for.

Delay Line Probes

The 15MHz ¼” Delay Line probe is the most commonly used probe with a PZX-7 or PVX instrument. When measuring in the E-E mode it can measure 0.006” to 0.400” in steel and aluminum.  Changing to I-E mode allows measurements to ~1.000”. In Plastics mode, measurements from 0.005” to 0.150”. Tapered delay lines are helpful for measuring on tubes and radiused corners. Graphite Delay lines can be helpful for measuring plastics that are similar in Impedance to Acrylic Delay Lines. Recommended Probes:

  • T-402-5507: 1/4", 15MHz, Microdot Connector, Standard
  • T-402-6507: 1/4", 20 MHz, Microdot Connector

For Best Results:

  • Remember to make sure that couplant such as mineral oil is used between the crystal and delay line.
  • For difficult applications try a high impedance couplant such as Echo 8 ZH  
  • Replace delay lines when they are chipped or worn.

A Note on Impedance:

Impedance is the product of a material's density and velocity. Air is very different from metals and plastics and therefore the sound beam will reflect at its interface. This is what makes thickness gauging possible. I-E measurements measure from the end of the Delay Line - if the Delay Line is acoustically similar to the test material, the Interface Echo will be weak or possibly disappear. This is sometimes an issue when measuring some types of plastics. The solution in that case is to use a Graphite Delay Line that has a dissimilar impedance.

Pencil Transducers

For Use With PVX and Similar A-Scan Instruments

Pencil probes concentrate the sound beam to a 1/16” spot which is best for measurements on containers, small diameter tubes, turbine blades, etc.  Using a high impedance couplant makes coupling easier. Care must be exercised to place the probe perpendicular (90°) to the test surface.

  • T-681-4507: 3/16" Diameter, 10 MHz, 90° Right Angle with Side Entry and Microdot Connector

Contact Transducers:

Contact Probes can be used with either the PZX-7 or PVX instruments to extend the measuring range. They can be used in E-E, I-E, P-E, or E-EV modes as required. Cables are not included.
