ElektroPhysik MikroTest 5 Manual Coating Gauges

ElektroPhysik MikroTest 5 Manual Coating Gauges

A Robust, Analog, Coating Thickness Gauge

Overview

The MikroTest 5 Manual Coating Gauge measures non-magnetic coatings on steel and galvanic nickel on steel. The coating thickness is measured by pressing the magnet (housed at the end of the Coating Gauge) against the non magnetic coating surface and manually pulling the magnet from contact until it is completely off via a scale. The MikroTest 5 Manual Coating Gauge works on flat or curved surfaces including overhead angles, on tubes, or pipes. The device is fully analog and does not require calibration or power.

An automatic pull-off model is available in several configurations and can be found here.

Operation

The manual mode of operation is as follows:

  1. The operator places the magnet in contact with the non-magnetic coating--the thickness of which is being measured. The magnet, which resembles a ball-point-pen head is pictured directly left.
  2. After contact, the operator turns the dial-scale, applying a pull-off force to the magnet until the magnet lifts off the coating.
  3. Once released, the operator stops turning and views the dial-scale, pictured to the left, whose stop point can be viewed and the thickness of the coating measured.

Features

  • Independent, analog operation; no recalibration or power supply required
  • Measurement at virtually any angle; i.e.,  horizontal, vertical, and overhead as well as on curved surfaces such as tubes or pipes
  • Tests all coatings on steel such as paints, powder coating, enamels, chrome, zinc as well as electroplated nickel on copper, aluminum and other non-ferrous metals
  • Mils Models Include a NIST traceable calibration certificate
  • Highest accuracy with simplest operation
  • Metal Housing and Measuring System that is resistant to solvent and mechanical shocks

Applications

The scope of application for the Mikrotest 5 is wherever you will need to measure electroplating and paint on steel. As such, it is best to ask yourself where such a manual coating gauge would be best utilized. It's rugged, simplified design makes a great field tool for preliminary data acquisition, or as a dependable primary on the production floor.

A Universal High-Temperature Kit is available for all models of the MikroTest 5 Models that allows it to operate at temperatures up to 212°F (100°C). It can also be used on surface temperatures up to 572°F (300°C), but the MikroTest must be limited to less than 5 seconds of surface contact or damage will result. The MK-HT Kit consists of aluminum feet and sensor prism.

Industries of application are:

  • Non-magnetic coatings like varnishes, enamels, chromium and zinc on ferromagnetic base materials (e.g. steel)
  • Electroplated nickel coatings on non-ferromagnetic substrates (e.g. aluminum, copper, synthetic materials etc.) (only the Automatic Ni 50 and Ni 100 models; click here for their listing)

MikroTest 5 Manual Models & Specifications

The MikroTest 5 Manual is available in two different measuring ranges, each in two different measuring units. The lower range (0-4Mils / 0-100 Microns) Models are ideal for measuring Electroplating and Paint on Steel. The higher range ( (0-40Mils / 0-1000 Microns) Models are ideal for measuring Paint on Steel. For ranges and applications beyond the scope of the MikroTest 5, check out the MikroTest 6 Series.
