The Solution for Electrical Conductivity Measurement for Nonferrous Metals

The Solution for Electrical Conductivity Measurement

The SIGMASCOPE® SMP350 is a compact handheld device for measuring the electrical conductivity of non-ferrous metals. It quickly and accurately measures the electrical conductivity of aluminum or copper. From the measured conductivity, you can then draw further conclusions about the hardness and strength of heat-treated materials. This lets you monitor the material stability of components that are exposed to large temperature fluctuations. Even heat damage and material fatigue can be determined simply this way.

To measure the electrical conductivity, the device employs the phase sensitive eddy current method (according to DIN EN 2004-1 and ASTM E1004). This type of signal evaluation enables non-contact measurement, even under paint or plastic coatings up to 500 μm thick. It also minimizes the influence of surface roughness.

Features:

  • Rapid and simple on-the-spot conductivity measurement of non-ferromagnetic metals according to DIN EN 2004-1 and ASTM E 1004.
  • Windows® CE operating system, high resolution touchscreen with virtual keypad
  • Individually adaptable user interface with simple calibration via user prompts
  • Memory for several thousand measuring applications and several thousand readings
  • Conductivity probes for a wide range of applications
  • Different measurement frequencies from 15 kHz up to 1 MHz depending on the probe
  • Graphical presentation of specification limits and extensive statistical evaluation of test series with date / time stamp as well as computation of Cp, Cpk and histogram presentation.
  • Automatic temperature compensation of the conductivity (integrated or external sensor).
  • Automatic curvature compensation for a known curvature diameter (up to 6 mm).
  • Certified traceable calibration standards (MS/m, %IACS)
  • Acoustic signal for measurement acquisition and violation of specification limits

Applications Include:

  • Airplanes
  • Mints - Coins
  • Thermal sprayed coatings of non-ferromagnetic metals, e.g. Cu
  • Absolute measurement of electrical conductivity during the production process of aluminum copper
  • Checking the electrical conductivity before anodizing aluminum

Recommended Probes

Probe: FS-24

Special Purpose Probe

  • Typically used for fasteners and other small parts.
  • Minimum Area: 3.3mm/0.132"
  • Edge Distance: 0.8mm/0.032"
  • Min Diameter: 2mm/0.080"

Probe: FS-40

General Purpose Probe

  • Typically used for sheets, bars and extrusions
  • Minimum Area: 15mm/0.600"
  • Edge Distance: 11mm/0.440"
  • Minimum Diameter: 2mm/0.080"

Additional Notes on the

FS-40 Probe:

  • The corresponding measurement probe FS40 operates at the measurement frequencies of 60 kHz, 120 kHz, 240 kHz and 480 kHz.
  • For automatic temperature compensation of the conductivity measurement, the current temperature of the specimen can be measured using either the temperature sensor integrated in the probe FS40 or an optional external sensor.
  • Note: Low Frequency FS40LF and High Frequency FS40HF Probes are available and should be specified as substitutes for the FS40 Probe.
