Dakota Ultrasonics offers a complete line of probes for virtually every application. The below guide includes our recommendations for the best probes to use for different applications. Additionally, our experienced staff can always help you select the best probe for your needs.

Pulse-Echo Mode Using 0-1st Echo

Thickness Measurement and Pitting Detection on Pipes and Plates

  • For thickness measurement and pitting detection on pipes and plates, a 5MHZ 1/4" UT-DU-T-002-2000 probe is typically used
  • A 5 MHZ 3/16" UT-DU-T-101-2000 probe should be used on small diameter tubes
  • If high resolution is needed to measure thinner material and to find smaller pits, we suggest using a 7.5 MHz 1/4" Extra Resolution Probe, UT-DU-T-102-3300

Thickness measurement on pressure vessels and thick materials

  • Typically, a 2.25 MHz 1/2" UT-DU-T-102-1000 probe is recommended to minimize false thin measurements caused by inclusions in the material
  • A similar probe, the UT-DU-T-104-1600 Composite Crystal probe could also be used if additional power is needed

 

 

Measuring hot materials

  • Dakota offers two probes that are temperature-stable, meaning that measurements will not drift as the probe heats up. With proper couplant and technique, these probes can measure materials up to 900­°F (482°C)
  • The 5 MHz 1/4" UT-DU-T-212-2001 probe is used for general purposes
  • The 5 MHz 1/2" UT-DU-T-214-2001 probe is used when more power is required for thicker and more attenuative material

 

Measuring wall thickness in radii - racing engine ports and cylinders

  • 5 MHz is typically used for iron and steel, 10MHz for aluminum. We offer low-profile options for these applications.
  • 5 MHz   1/4" Low Profile - 1" wand, 0.6" Radius, UT-DU-T-162-2110
  • 5 MHz,  1/4" Low Profile - 9" wand, 0.6" UT-DU-T-132-2110
  • 5  MHz  ½, 2” Radius, UT-DU-T-104-2120
  • 10 MHz, 1/4" Low Profile - 1" wand, 0.6" UT-DU-T-162-4110
  • 10 MHz, 1/4" Low Profile - 9" wand, 0.6", UT-DU-T-132-4110
  • 10 MHz, 1/2", 2" UT-DU-T-104-4120

 

Echo-Echo Mode

For Through-Coating Thickness Gauging

  • For Dakota's Through-Coating gauges using Echo-Echo mode, such as the ZX-6, MMX-6 and MVX, HD (High Damped) probes are needed.
  • The 5MHz ¼” UT-DU-T-102-2700 is used most frequently
  • The 5 MHz 3/16” UT-DU-T-101-2700 is used on small diameter tubes
  • The 7.5 MHZ, 3/16” High Damped UT-DU-T-101-3000 is suggested if high resolution is needed to measure thinner material and find smaller pits
  • The 3.5 MHz ½” UT-DU-T-104-9700 is suggested for thicker materials

Pulse-Echo-Coating Mode (PECT)

  • For Dakota CMX Gauges using Pulse-Echo-Coating Mode (PECT), CT Probes are needed.
  • The 5 Mhz 1/4" UT-DU-T-102-2900 is the default
  • The 7.5 MHz 3/16" UT-DU-T-101-3900 is used on small diameter tubes
  • The 3.5 MHz 1/2" UT-DU-T-104-9900 with Potted Side is used for thick tanks and plates

Sizes and Connectors

With the exception of the High Temperature Probes, all probes listed above have side-mounted potted cables. Probes can also be supplied with top mounted cables and replaceable cables (with either Lemo 00 or MicroDot connectors).
